    Online webcam tester

    None

Webcams appeared in the early nineties, when the Internet began to conquer the planet. In the computer lab at the University of Cambridge, the camera was aimed at a coffee maker.

    Webcam history

The famous black-and-white Cambridge webcam had a good ten years of service and was taken offline in August 2001 (1991-2001). After entering a well-deserved rest, the camera was for some time a museum piece, and then it was bought at auction for 3,000 pounds.

Regular PC users have been able to purchase a webcam from Connectix since 1994. These cameras only worked with Macintosh computers. In 1995, there were already adaptations for Windows, black and white images somewhat enlivened the gray shades. The recording was made at a speed of 60 frames per second.

The very next year, 1996, EarthCam started building a network of webcams. Users could observe the world in real time, first through photos and then through video images. The popularity was not long in coming - the request for a video stream on the network has been around for a long time. In the 21st century, video cameras moved inside the computer, the quality improved significantly, the resolution increased, and the recording speed increased. Soon there were laptops, tablets and smartphones with a built-in camera. Mass production led to a decrease in price. For comparison, in 1994 the price of a webcam was about $100 ($225 adjusted for inflation today).

    Interesting facts

    • The very first webcam was installed in 1991 at the University of Cambridge. The inhabitants of the computer lab saw the coffee maker and could avoid going to the empty vessel.
    • The San Francisco Fog Camera is the oldest webcam. It was launched as a student project in 1994 and has updated every 20 seconds since then.
    • Some people live live. In 1996, a certain Jennifer Ringley on her website JenniCam began to demonstrate her uncut family life through a webcam. At her peak, the woman attracted more than 100 million viewers a week.

Now webcams have become part of everyday life. We shoot interesting events, moments of life and everything that deserves attention. To check if your camera is working, use a reliable and simple test.
